The managers of the Regal Hotel in North Kaneshie and the Kegali Hotel in Dansoman, Accra, have been detained by the domestic tax revenue arm of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The accusations against them are the result of their inability to provide their clients with Value-Added Tax (VAT) invoices, a crucial obligation under tax legislation.

The GRA has established a larger strategy to encourage VAT compliance, and the enforcement effort is a key part of it.

It is an offence for a registered tax-paying business to fail to issue VAT invoices to customers who patronise their services.

The Ghana Revenue Authority has been embarking on an exercise to ensure all suppliers of taxable items, goods, or services, issue VAT invoices as required by law.

The exercise, which began on May 16 2023, has so far led to the arrest of a few firm managers who are currently the subject of a probe before possible prosecution.
