The nomination of Justice of Supreme Court, Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo as Chief Justice by President Akufo-Addo has been referred to the appointments committee of Parliament.

The President last week wrote to the Council of State proposing Justice Gertrude Araba Torkonoo as new Chief Justice to replace Justice Anin Yeboah who retires this month.

First Deputy speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu after reading the communication from the president to the house urged the appointments committee which he chairs to expedite action on the vetting of the new CJ in order not to create a vacuum.

When approved, Justice Torkornoo will be the third appointment to the office of the Chief Justice by President Akufo-Addo since he assumed office in January 2017.

She will also become Ghana’s third female Chief Justice in history.
