Ernest Yaw Anim, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been elected as the new member of parliament for Kumawu in the by-election that was held on May 23, 2023.

His nearest rival, Akwasi Amankwah of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), received 3,723 votes, while he received 15,264.

Kwaku Duah, first independent candidate, got 2,478 votes in the 2020 election against a former member of parliament (MP) who some political observers had predicted may spark a crisis. A second independent candidate named Kwaku Duah received 62 votes.

The Kumawu by-election was necessary since the sitting MP, Philip Basoah, passed away in March 2023.
