CSA warns public against downloading unapproved apps

The president of the Cybersecurity Expert Association Ghana, Abubakar Issaka, has cautioned the public against using unapproved messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram.

It comes after revelations of existence of Whatsapp and Telegram modifications for Android devices, that have embedded malware called CanesSpy, which is coded in Arabic and Azerbaijan.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company has filed a lawsuit against three developers in China and Taiwan, for distributing unofficial Whatsapp applications including HeyMods, that compromised over one million user accounts.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (14 December), Issaka said: “Once you are using authentic WhatsApp, you are safe.”

“I will recommend Android users [to] check their apps to see if they are using the modified WhatsApp. If not, they should delete it and go back to the play store to download the modified app,” he added.
