The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has threatened to reject the reintroduction of road tolls across the country.

The group wants the government to abolish the idea to reintroduce the tolls.

They could not fathom the collection of taxes on dilapidated roads.

Amongst other things, the Association argues that the abolishment of road tolls has reduced unnecessary congestion traffic on various Highways.

According to them, the President Akufo-Addo government made it clear it is replacing the road toll with E-levy hence the need to scrap it off.

“What happens to E-levy? The government must explain the reason behind the sudden diversion considering the current mismanaged economic situation we find ourselves as a country,” parts of the statement read.

The statement further called on all drivers association unions and all our stakeholders to resist any attempt by the government to impose road tolls on them.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana urged the public to also add their voices as the negative impact will be staring at them.

Payment of tolls on public roads ceased in November 2021 as part of policy measures announced by the government in the 2022 Budget a move that displaced several road toll collectors.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, admitted that the suspension of road toll collection had hampered the government’s revenue generation.

He claims that the hasty decision made in anticipation of the passage of the E-levy has now become a major issue, with the government struggling to deal with it.

The Minority in parliament had been advocating for the reintroduction of road tolls arguing that the cessation was not financially sustainable, especially since the government is struggling to raise revenue.
