The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that it is an offence for electorates to take photographs of their ballots papers indicating who they voted for.
According to the EC, persons who are caught taking photos of their ballots would be arrested and handed over to the Police.
Speaking during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, the Director of Electoral Services, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe said the act breaches the secrecy of the ballot.
“If you finish and you tell people who you voted for, that is fine but it is an offence for you to take photos of it and be showing it to people. That breaches the secrecy of the ballot. In the view of the law you can be arrested,” he said.
This information comes after videos circulating on social media showed some individuals who voted during the EC’s special voting displaying their ballots after voting.
