All active and unregistered SIM cards are to be deactivated and removed today, May 31 due to a directive from the National Communications Authority (NCA).

The SIM card re-registration exercise was announced by the Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful in October 2021.

The exercise was supposed to last for a period of 6 months but faced numerous challenges resulting in the extension of the deadlines several times.

Per the last extension, today is the deadline.

But a day before the final deadline, hundreds of Ghanaians besieged the premise of the National Identification Authority’s Headquarters in Accra in a last-minute attempt to secure a Ghana Card which is mandatory for the re-registration exercise to enable them to register their SIM cards to avoid deactivation.

It is however unclear if the authorities will further extend the time given the numerous active but unregistered SIM Cards and the difficulties some Ghanaians are facing in acquiring their Ghana Cards.

Meanwhile, the government on February 14, 2023, disclosed that a total of 25,150,522 SIM cards had been successfully registered in Ghana as of February 9, 2023, and also encouraged the public to comply with the registration timelines.
