Elections for a new representative for the Central Region’s Assin North Constituency are currently underway.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s James Gyakye Quayson was elected and sworn in as an MP for Assin North on the NDC party’s ticket, but the Supreme Court ruled on May 17 that this was against the constitution and that it was therefore invalid.

At 99 polling stations in Assin North, around 41,168 voters are anticipated to cast ballots in what has been dubbed a crucial by-election that will determine who controls the country’s parliament.

In today’s election, Charles Opoku of the ruling NPP is running unopposed against James Gyakye Quayson of the opposition NDC.

Quayson was previously the MP for the area, but the Supreme Court removed him after finding that his 2020 election campaign contained flaws because he was a dual citizen at the time.
