The Catholic Church has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately shut down the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexuals, Transgender and Queer Individuals (LGBTQI) office in Accra.
The office was opened in Ghana in the late January 2021.
A statement issued by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference said “We the Catholic Bishops of Ghana write to condemn all those who support the practice of homosexuality in Ghana.”
The press statement dated February 19, 2021, signed and issued by the President of the GCBC, Most Reverend Philip K. Naameh, said the existence of the LGBTQI agenda is a “complete disorder of the fundamental law of God in creating man and woman” hence the need for it to be shut down.
It further stated “The LGBTQI is a clear departure from God’s purpose of creation because the woman was not created to be an object of pleasure for man,” they said added that the Catholic as a Church would only continue to recognize marriages between a man and a woman to ensure that God’s purpose of creation is materialized.
In addition, the party called on the Executive and Legislature to never “slow down or succumb to the tension of endorsing LGBTQI’s rights in Ghana.”
Meanwhile, Alex Kofi Donkor, Director of the LGBTQI+ in Ghana, asked Ghanaians to look at human rights problems in relation to LGBTQI.
On Friday, February 19, he told Miriam Osei Agyemang on TV3 that LGBTQI individuals in the country are verbally and physically attacked.
This, he said, must stop because they have fundamental human rights that must be respected and protected by the society.
As he explained why an LGBTQI agency is found in Ghana, “We created an office space where we talk about issues which affect us as community and ways in which we can resolve the issues.
“Let me quickly say in this country a lot of times we do experience a lot of violence and abuse that are perpetuated towards people who are identified as LGBTQI or people who are perceived as LGBTQI persons.
“When these violence are perpetuated against such people it goes unattended to, people do that with impunity.”
