The former Special Initiatives Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson says a gun incident that she was involved in last year did not happen at the said polling station as reported.
On Thursday, February 18 the Minister-designate for Fisheries and Aquaculture clarified that she had fired a gun but 100 meters away from the polling station in Kasoa, as was the case reported.
“Let me place it on record that yes, there was the name of a polling station but it did not happen at the polling station it happened outside the polling station which was about 150 metres away from the centre,” she told the Committee.
When the minority leader Haruna Iddrisu asked what could have provoked a Minister of State to fire a weapon in public, she said, “it is an action I’ve regretted.”
She said she was incapable of addressing the question about the incident that many criticized and requested her resignation in 2020, because the matter was investigated by the police.
During the election registration exercise last year, the officials of the Electoral commission were compelled to close down the Step to Christ centre in the Awutu Senya East constituency following a riot by gun-wielding men who stormed the premises with the MP.
The men, who allegedly numbered around 15, were charged with trying to stop potential voters from taking part in the activity and resulted in burning motorcycles.
Mrs. Hawa Koomson defended her decision later on Asempa FM of shooting a gun in a polling station.
She said that she had a weapon, and only gave a warning shot when her car was assaulted by suspected NDC members.
It was said that she did not shoot the gun and was just at the front of the gunmen who were with her.
When Alhassan Tampuli, the NPP MP for Gushiego, asked if she had allegedly fired the weapon, she said
that it would be difficult for her to talk to about it, as the problem is still being investigated.
