Mercy Ama Gyamfi Bello, popularly named Ama Sey, the New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, appears to be carrying out her threats to dismiss the governing party and contest the upcoming parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
At all vantage points in the constituency, some posters and banners of the Akwatia MP were splashed, declaring her entrance into the parliamentary race after alleging that she was robbed in the NPP parliamentary primaries.
Her backers asked her to stand alone after the alleged gang up machination, and after the constant demands on the outgoing MP to run in the December polls as an independent parliamentary candidate, she is believed to be able to run as an independent candidate.
A collective called Friends of Ama Sey ‘s posters and banners have a logo of a breastfeeding mother feeding a baby with the Ghana flag in the background and quotes as ‘The Greediness Must Disappear.’
Ama Sey narrowly lost Ernest Kumi ‘s four-vote lead to Ernest Kumi in a four-seat parliamentary primary constituency race.
She supposedly complained that she was robbed after the conclusion of the primaries, accusing the party system of replacing certain ghost names to vote in the party album, triggering her defeat.
She has not, however, officially announced her intention to run as an independent candidate, but a source close to her indicated that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations, she will choose the parliamentary forms, even though the party leadership has called on her to change her decision.
Though talks are underway to cool her down, she is also being lobbied by certain party members and sympathizers to contest the general election as an independent nominee.
Interactions with some of the committed and floating party voters showed that during their parliamentary primaries, the sitting MP was not viewed equally by the party leaders.
Last month, after a float to have a chat with her, aggrieved supporters of the NPP drawn from Wenchi, Takrowase, Dwenase, Topremang, Appinamang, Akwatia, Boaduaas and Kusi stormed her home.
The floating people, including the elderly and the mentally disabled, said they would do everything in their power to convince Ama Sey to run solo in December ‘s parliamentary polls.
Over the weekend, the group Friends of Ama Sey, at a presser, alleged that some degree of arrogance, naivety and barbarism had crept into some NPP bigwigs within the electorate and it is time to pay back.
The party argues that Ernest Kumi, the parliamentary candidate chosen, is obscure and only appeared recently in the elections at district level.
Therefore, they encourage Mercy Gyamfi to close the beaks by riding on an independent parliament candidate’s thicket.
In the December elections, they then promised and threatened to vote for skirt and blouse.
