The youth wing of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the withdrawal of the 10% tax on all winnings from sports betting and lotteries.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 16, the party announced a series of actions to force the government to withdraw the tax which has not found favour with the youth.

According to the NDC, the implementation of withholding tax on betting and lottery profits will unfairly affect the nation’s youth and the larger betting sector.

The Akufo-Addo government’s decision to impose a 10% betting tax as part of its efforts to increase income has drawn criticism and alarm.

The NDC youth wing claim that young Ghanaians who gamble for fun and, in some cases, a living are disproportionately impacted by this levy.

“Our determination to protect the funds Young People secure through betting is unyielding. Through agitations, protests, advocacy, and civic engagements, we will ensure our voices are heard and demand that this CORRUPT Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government rescind its decision,” the statement signed by NDC’s Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo said.

“We INTEND to do the following; Picket at the Ministry of Finance and occupy government offices across the country. Start and scale up nationwide conventional and unconventional lawful agitations as a measure of the resistance. Instigate young people to confront officials of this government and demand AN END to the CORRUPTION and Insensitivity of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-failed brigade, and Occupy Parliament and other government agencies,” he added.
