Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister-designate of Communications has hinted that soon legislation will be passed to ensure that imported mobile phones cannot be unblocked.
She said the central cell phone identification registry will be available “and therefore it cannot be used here if your phone was stolen from outside and sold here.”
“If it’s blocked there, it is blocked here”, she said.
This was announced by the Ablekuma West MP during her vetting on Monday February 15 to continue in the capacity of a communications minister.

She said the government would soon conduct a country-wide SIM registration exercise to register all SIM cards.
“It is imperative that we register our SIM cards,” she advised.
“It is imperative that we register our devices. We are working with the industry to get that done.
“So, we will notify the public when the arrangements are ready. We hope that everybody will take advantage of this new opportunity to secure our devices”.
She said there would be a grace period in which all unregistered SIM cards would be barred.
