After an illegal mining pit caved in at Ayamfuri in the Central Region’s Upper Denkyira West District, five people died.
According to news surrounding the deadly crash, fifteen other illegal miners suffered significant injuries.
“According to a story by Citi News,” the illegal miners were working in an abandoned mining pit between Ayamfuri and Gyaman when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has transported the dead bodies to the morgue of the Dunkwa government hospital, according to sources.
Mr Isaac Gyasi, NADMO Director for Upper Denkyira West District, clarified that on Thursday, October 1 , 2020, at about 3 pm, the Organization received reports that some illegal miners operating in the Upper Denkyira West between Ayanfuri and Gyaman had died after the mining pit in which they were employed caved in.
The Upper Denkyira West NADMO Director told Citi News, “A rescue team including the police and NADMO rushed to the area and were able to rescue the 20 illegal miners, but unfortunately for them, five people died in the process.
The mining pit is part of a mining company operating in the area, according to the District NADMO Director, but the illegal miners found their way into the pit to operate, contributing to the unfortunate incident.
